By the winter of 2015-2016 a fragile truce had been negotiated in Donetsk and Lugansk, the east Ukranian regions most effected by the war against the Russian-backed separatists.

Even though the number of clashes and casualties dropped significantly during the ceasefire, the battle still raged on around the town of Avdiivka in Donetsk.

More than a thousand kilometers away from the fighting a relief convoy was set up in the western region of Transcarpathia. Organised by the Greek Catholic Church, the convoy consisted of a number of old ambulances packed to the brim with food, clothes and medical supplies. They headed towards Donetsk and Mariupol to aid the underfunded and underequipped military units and hospitals that had to bear the brunt of the prolonged war in eastern Ukraine.
