The Black Hmong are one of the many ethnic minorities that live in the mountainous region of northern Vietnam. Even today the communist government of Vietnam has not forgotten that the Hmongs were fighting alongside the United States during the war. The tribes have to face strict economic measures and police brutality on a regular basis.

Modern technology and globalisation are slow to reach the remote Hmong communities. The ancient traditions and beliefs still very much shape the everyday life of the villages.

According to the Hmong lore, a person falls ill when one of his souls leaves his body. The shaman's job is to lure the wandering soul back with sacred rites and animal sacrifices.
